BIS Core Classes

BIS 301 Foundations of Interdisciplinary Studies

This foundation course focuses on the interdisciplinary studies program and the different approaches to interdisciplinary research. Students are given the background they require to begin an interdisciplinary investigation into their concentration areas. Students also learn how to view social problems from an interdisciplinary perspective. Furthermore, students learn to understand their individual strengths and investigate ways to apply themselves in an increasingly interdisciplinary workplace.

BIS 302 Interdisciplinary Inquiry

In this class, students continue to explore the interdisciplinary approach to studying which includes the integration of their disciplines. Various methods of research are taught including qualitative and quantitative analysis.

BIS 401 Applied Interdisciplinary Studies

This course takes the form of an internship where students can learn about their concentration areas in an applied setting and gain practical experience. The site becomes an experiential learning lab where students integrate their coursework with hands on experience. Students have the opportunity to apply their interdisciplinary problem solving skills.

I did an internship with the Society of Friends of Sassoon Hospital in Pune, India. I volunteered at Shreevatsa, a children’s orphanage, under the guidance of Mrs. Madhuri Abhiyankar.

BIS 402 Senior Seminar

The Hero’s Journey and the Realm of Possiblities

This senior seminar aims to help students integrate what they have learnt from the previous three core courses. There are various topics that students choose from depending their concentration areas and interest.

For this class I choose Prof. Layne Gneiting’s class on the Hero’s Journey. As a class we each embarked on our own journey with Carol Pearson’s book, Awakening the Archetypes, as our guide. This journey entails a blend of psychology, mythology, communication, the arts, business, spirituality, folklore, and history. The deeply inspiring texts motivate students to analyze their lives and discover their passions. At the completion of the course, students create an online portfolio to commemorate their work over the last four years.
